How Can I Make My Wood Floors Look New Again?
Just like any type of flooring, wood floors can take quite a beating, including deep scratches, dirt, and dust! So how can you make your wood floors look new again?
We will discuss how to check what flooring you have, and how to restore them to its former glory.
Wood Floor Types
There are many different types of wood flooring; Sussex Floor Restoration has a great and informative blog discussing the difference between each, read it here.
Knowing which type of floor you have will change the way you clean and maintain it.
Wood Floor Finishes
The type of finish will determine how to clean and maintain your flooring.
There are many different types of finishes, from oil-based to lacquer. Find out what coat of finish your flooring has by using this tip:
Find a spot on your floor that has a normal amount of foot traffic, and place a drop of water on it.
If the water gets absorbed by the wood, this means there is no seal and should not be cleaned with water. However, if the water sits on top of the wood, this means it has been sealed.
The best and easiest way to test what your floor has been sealed with is to run your hand along the surface. If you feel the wood grain and texture, this means it’s probably been coated with oil or even wax.
To know if your wood floor has been sealed with wax use this tip: on a bit of inconspicuous flooring rub a coin and look for wax buildup.
Top Tips for Keeping your Floors Looking Their Best
Daily cleaning and maintaining will help with the longevity of your wooden floors.
- Use felt feet on the bottom of your furniture.
- When moving furniture around the house, ensure that you pick it up.
- Remove your shoes as you enter your home.
- Use a brush to sweep debris and dust off of your flooring, as it is a gentler method compared to vacuuming.
- Wipe your pets’ feet before they walk on the wooden floor.
- As soon as you notice any kind of spill, clean and wipe the floor.
