How To Clean White Sofa Upholstery
Owning a white sofa can be a challenge, as it is far more susceptible to dirt and staining when comparing it to a darker coloured fabric.
As careful as you may be, there’s no avoiding the stains, spillages and grime that builds up with everyday use.
Therefore, there is even more stress on having a thorough maintenance plan and cleaning schedule for ensuring your white sofa stays white.
This blog is not only written as advice for cleaning white upholstery but also good for any coloured upholstery. All sofas deserve the same amount of care and attention, no matter the colour or material.
Preparing Your Sofa Upholstery for Cleaning
When getting your upholstery ready for cleaning there are a few tasks that need to be completed before any work can begin.
Remove Debris – Ensure that all large debris is removed from the sofa, these include items such as rocks, solid spills, biscuits etc.
Remove Cushions – Do the cushions have removable covers? If so, wash these according to the instructions present. Otherwise, they can be cleaned along with the rest of the sofa.
Vacuum Clean – By vacuuming the sofa, it will remove smaller, slightly harder to spot crumbs and debris. This is an important step in the process, otherwise, you may be rubbing in the dirt while cleaning if not properly vacuumed.
Cleaning Your Upholstery
At House Proud Finish, we have two different methods that we can use to ensure that you have clean sofa upholstery. The first is the deep clean process. This process tends to be used on sofas that have fewer delicate fabrics. The second is our low moisture cleaning service, which tends to be used on fabrics that are more delicate.
Deep Cleaning Five Stage Process
- Pre-Vacuum – Remove as much insoluble soil as possible.
- Fibre Matched Pre-Spray – Use a cleaning solution to start to break down any soiling present.
- Agitation – Agitation of the material suspends the soil in solution.
- Rinse – Rinsing the soiled solution from the material.
- Extraction – Extract the suspended soiling.
When deep cleaning your sofa, we force dry the upholstery so that it is 95% dry before we leave.
Low Moisture Cleaning
This can be divided into two types, dry cleaning and bonnet cleaning.
Dry Cleaning –
This is where we use a quick-drying solvent to clean your upholstery. We do this with some fibres due to their delicate nature, and to others, as they can be damaged if exposed to too much water.
Bonnet Cleaning –
This is similar to the deep cleaning process described above, however, in the end, we use a cotton bonnet to agitate and extract the soiling. By not rinsing the upholstery it will dry quicker and is suitable for delicate fibres such as on some white sofas.
